Commonly Asked Questions
Q - What is the difference between
Deep Tissue and Swedish?
A - In Deep Tissue Massage the therapist
is concentrating on musculo-skeletal (where the muscle meets the bone),
as well as skin, fascia and muscle. The intention is to realign posture,
balance muscle function and awareness, and free-up congestion at muscular
attachments. In contrast, Swedish Massage is used primarily for relaxation.
It is very soothing and wonderful if a person has no problem areas.
Q - Why does an athlete need Sports
Massage?
A - No matter what your sport is,
exercise stresses and strains the muscle tissue. It also can injure the
tendons and ligaments, which are frequently stretched beyond the normal
demands of the sport. Exercise tears the muscle fibers, stretches the
fascia (outer covering of the muscle), builds up toxins that
reside in the muscle, which leaves the muscle sore and stiff. Sports Massage
will help bring all of these conditions back in balance.
Q - Wouldn't stretching be just
as good as massage in the case of spasms?
A - A good stretching routine will
pull some of the knots out, but it can't match the powers of massage for
spreading and soothing the fatigued muscle fibers. Deep strokes separate
the muscle fibers from one another. Massage isn't a cure-all. It can't
make you run faster, although I spoke with a runner once that claimed it
improved his performance by 20 percent.
